After spending the time to create the perfect paver patio, the last thing you want is for it to get damaged. Unfortunately, one of the biggest types of damage to your paver patio occurs underneath it. Insects can get into the ground below your pavers and cause some major issues. If pests weaken the soil enough, it can cause your pavers to sink or shift. That, in turn, can result in an uneven surface that people may trip over. Let’s take a look at a few of the insect that can cause issues with your paver patio.
Ants
Ants may not see that dangerous, but they can create a large network of tunnels underneath your paver patio. Once they do, the foundation of the patio begins to weaken and pavers start to sink. Ants can burrow through the sand between your pavers, so they can actually put their nest right underneath the patio. If you eat on your patio often, they may decide to do just that since it’s likely some food will fall on the ground. If you see any ant hills, spray them with pesticide. If you’re uncertain where the colony is, put down bait traps. The ants will take the bait back to the others.
Rodents such as Moles, Mice, and Chipmunks
Like ants, there are a number of rodents that can burrow under your paver patio. Because they’re larger, they’re going to make bigger tunnels. This means you may see your pavers sinking much more quickly than you would with ants. Some people have had good luck putting mothballs around the area they want to keep rodents out of. Most don’t like the smell. You can also try trapping them. You may have to call an exterminator if these methods don’t’ work.
Hornets and Wasps
While bees and wasps won’t actually damage your patio, they can make it difficult to enjoy the space. They like to make nests in flowerbeds and inside paver walls if they can find an opening. You’ll want to spray them whenever you see them. Try to follow one back to its nest so you can take them all out. Remember that honeybees aren’t dangerous—don’t hurt them if you can avoid it. If you see a swarm, call a professional to safely remove them.
