If you’re planning on creating a patio out of pavers, you first need to decide which pavers you’re going to use. Just like with many other types of materials, not all pavers are created equally. In fact, there are some major differences between some types of pavers, and not all of them are going to work for every project. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you choose the correct pavers for your patio.
Consider the Climate
Climate can play a major part in how your pavers weather over the years. Pavers that are fairly porous, such as brick, may not stand up to a lot of rain. For moderate climates, brick can work very well, though. In harsher climates, you may want to go for other types of stone. Some pavers are even created with harsh conditions in mind and are designed to hold up under heavy rains, heat, or ice.
Will the Area be Exposed?
Your patio likely has no cover over it or is only partially covered. That’s another reason why you’ll want pavers that can stand up to the weather. Something, such as Nicolock’s Paver-Shield pavers, work very well here since they’re designed to be incredibly dense while also resistant to fading. Another good option is one of the pavers from the Endura Color Plus line. For an area that’s covered and not as exposed, you could go with a paver made from materials such as limestone.
Consider the Design
Do you have a specific design or pattern for your pavers? That could play a part in which paver you choose. Some are more colorful than others and may work better in a playful design, while others are monochrome or designed to be less attention-grabbing. Do you want to go with a classic, simple look or something more modern?
How Wide Is the Space?
If you’re going to include a path or have a narrow part of your patio, you may need to look at specific paver designs to fit those spaces. On the other hand, larger pavers can often be more affordable overall since they cover more space.
