Concrete or Brick Pavers – Which Is Better?

Pavers can be made out of concrete, but they can also be made from brick. Both can be good options for your paver patio, walkway, or other space. Both options are very durable, and there’s no difference in how you install them. So which option is right for you? Is one better than the other?

Concrete Pavers

Pavers made out of concrete can come in a wide variety of shapes and even colors. They’re very affordable because the raw materials (aggregate and cement) are fairly cheap. Because they can be poured in various shapes and have pigment added to them, concrete pavers are available in many styles. Because they’re formed in a mold, you can purchase an entire batch of pavers that are the exact same size and shape. This makes them easier to install.

There are a couple of downsides to concrete, though. The color does fade over time, especially if the pavers are in direct sunlight most of the day. To slow this process down, you may need to seal the pavers. Concrete also wears down more easily than brick, so the overall lifespan of concrete pavers is shorter than brick. However, you’ll still be able to go a good 15 to 20 years before they need replacing.

Brick Pavers

Brick or clay pavers are made by baking clay in a kiln. They can’t be dyed, but they can be colored by adding in different types of clay. You don’t get as much variety, but there are still options. Bricks do last longer than concrete because they don’t erode as easily. However, they can still break, especially when placed under severe stress or when moisture freezes in surface cracks.

Bricks do tend to cost more than concrete pavers, but they don’t need to be sealed. There is overall less maintenance with bricks. Installation can be a bit more difficult, though, since bricks are not a uniform shape or size due to how they’re made.

Overall, though, both brick and concrete pavers can be used to create an amazing paver patio. Ultimately, the choice really comes down to which look you prefer. The team here at Island Block & Masonry Supply can help you select the right pavers for your space.
